As the market continues to grow, so too does the demand for medications like Nexium, AstraZeneca’s blockbuster drug.
The global pharmaceutical industry is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.1%. That’s up from 3.1% of the U. S. market for prescription drugs in 2015, and 3.6% of the global market for over-the-counter drugs.
The growth in the market is driven by the increasing prevalence of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, arthritis, and obesity, as well as the increasing demand for prescription medications like Nexium.1,2
Nexium, which is available over-the-counter as an acid-suppressing drug, is one of the most prescribed medications in the U. and has been in use for years.3
But there are many reasons why Nexium could not be trusted in the United States and that’s why it’s important to make sure you are getting what you need.
You may need to visit your doctor for Nexium. You should also ask their pharmacist for the following medications:
Nexium
The most common Nexium prescribed for heartburn, or GERD, is Zantac, a prescription medication that works by relieving acid production in the stomach.
It is available only with a doctor’s prescription. The recommended dosage of Zantac is 2-3 tablets per day in the U. S., for the treatment of reflux symptoms or heartburn. The dosage for Nexium is adjusted based on the severity of the condition and response.
Heartburn
Nexium is often prescribed to patients with high heartburn symptoms, such as heartburn that occurs more than two hours before. If it occurs more than two hours before, Nexium can trigger a burning sensation in the chest.
Nexium can also be prescribed to people who have a history of ulcers, such as those who have gastrointestinal problems. The recommended dosage of Nexium is 10 milligrams daily, although your doctor may adjust it based on your individual needs and response to the medication.
Nexium is not the only medication that is prescribed for heartburn. In addition to Zantac, you can also use other acid-suppressing drugs like Prilosec, which is available only with a doctor’s prescription.
Drugs like Prilosec are taken once daily, with or without food. They are known to help with GERD symptoms.
There are also other medications that are prescribed to patients with acid reflux that may be less effective or that can be taken in smaller amounts to reduce the risk of side effects. These include Pepcid, a prescription antibiotic that helps to relieve stomach acid.
For Nexium, you can take it as needed, usually at least 30 minutes to an hour before eating, if you’re experiencing symptoms of reflux or heartburn.3
Antibiotics
Some antibiotics can sometimes make Nexium less effective. It is also possible for antibiotics to make Nexium less effective. You should also inform your doctor if you’ve taken any antibiotics before starting Nexium. Taking antibiotics as directed can make Nexium less effective.
In some cases, antibiotics can sometimes be used to prevent side effects caused by Nexium. You should also inform your doctor if you take any other medications for stomach ulcers, such as St. John’s wort.
It’s important to tell your doctor about all medications you’re taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements. They will likely recommend a different medication if you’re at a higher risk of side effects.
Proton pump inhibitors
In addition to the over-the-counter Zantac, you can also use the prescription medications Protonix, Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, and Protonix, which are all available only with a doctor’s prescription. These drugs are taken once daily, with or without food, to reduce the risk of side effects.
Protonix is also sometimes prescribed to patients who are not able to swallow capsules, which are made of a different drug called acidifying fluid. Taking Nexium as prescribed may help to relieve acid reflux symptoms.
